I played the role of Owen Hartley in "Smoke: A Ballad of the Night Riders", a bluegrass musical written by David Alford. The show was directed by Anna Filippo with musical direction by Rollie Mains, and is presented in Adams, Tennessee as part of the Bell Witch Fall Festival. Here I am pictured with Jenny Norris Light as my wife Callie. The show tells the story of the Hartley family, and their struggles to survive during the Black Patch Tobacco Wars at the turn of the 20th century. David has taken a fascinating, troubling piece of history and crafted from it a very human, moving story.
Below are some musical highlights taped at the final dress rehearsal.
I appeared again in "Smoke" the following year, this time playing the roles of the Storyteller and Dr. Amoss. Martha Wilkinson directed.
